Over time, lint gets stuck in there,and like a snowball effect, more lint gets stuck to the lint already in there eventually leading to a clog. This clog prevents the dryer exhaust from being properly evacuated and reduces the dryer's efficiency. This will cause you to have to run your dryer longer and thus cost more electricity. In addition, if the clog gets too big it can become a major fire hazard or water damage from the blockage trapping moisture.
